We print our prints on ultra premium fine art paper with a soft matte finish. While this makes them oh-so-rich and vibrant in colour [seriously, they sparkle in the sunlight], it also leaves them susceptible to fingerprints and scratches when not handled carefully. If you are unhappy with the condition your print arrives in, please contact us right away with an attached image and we will start the process of getting you set up with a replacement.
That being said, there are a few things you can do to ensure your print stays in the best condition possible, for as long as possible:
1. Avoid handling prints on the front face. Oils from the skin may mark or damage the face of the paper, leaving fingerprints, smudges, or scuff marks.
2. Try not to brush off the surface of the print. If your print has any dust particles on it, brushing the surface could scratch it. Instead we recommend blowing on it gently or using compressed air to safely clear the surface. If you absolutely must wipe the surface, use a soft microfiber or similar style cloth, and wipe very gently. Do not scrub, or the ink may smudge or scuff.
3. Avoid placing your print in direct sunlight for extended periods. While our paper and ink both boast brilliant fade-resistant properties and look FANTASTIC in the sun, like anything else, too much direct sunlight could potentially cause damage. Areas that alternate sun and shade should pose no issue.
A few other suggestions we have for mounting or safe-keeping include:
1. Keep your print with the cardboard backing it was packaged with. These backboards do a wonderful job at keeping prints rigid and safe, and can be used as a mounting mat when fastening prints to walls. We recommend using double sided tape or Command Strips [poster strips] to mount your print to the board, which can then be mounted to the wall by using simple push pins. There is no need to pierce the print or the board, as the bottom pins will support the print, and the top pins will hold it to the wall [see images below for example]. This saves you from having to poke holes in your print while simultaneously giving you the freedom to swap out prints without removing your pins… just carefully slide the board out sideways! You can also use command strips or double sided tape to mount the board to the wall.
2. Keep your print in the poly bag it was packaged with. Poly bags also do a wonderful job at protecting your print from smudges and scratches, whether you’re ready to mount them or prefer to store them away! Poly bags are acid and lignin free and archival safe, meaning they’re free of harmful chemicals that will yellow or deteriorate your prints over time. These bags will keep for a long time!
Fun Fact:
These ‘tricks’ also are also great ways to reuse and recycle your packaging!
