Born to human parents in the early 90’s, a creature called Zan came crashing into this world with a pencil in hand… and hasn’t put it down ever since.
Striving to fill her parents’ creative shoes from a young age, she spent many hours studying the arts, daydreaming like a madman, awkwardly staring at unsuspecting subjects, and whipping crumpled sheets of paper across the room until one day… it all started making sense. The studying went on, taking form through a wide variety of styles and flavours as the young artist grew, and still continues on today.
Having an annoyingly lengthy human name and an affinity for fantasy, Zan began signing her work in 3 letter acronyms, relative to a series of characters she was designing at the time. During this time, a lot of weird synchronicities took place, but we’ll touch more on that another day. She adopted the name “zan” in 2007, after an introspective shift in perspective caused her to change her style (and consequently her character) to one of a more surreal nature, exploring what she describes as a “visual extraction of sensory input”, with heavy notes of imagery and symbolism throughout. These elements can still be seen in her work today.
With influences in every realm including classic art, animation, illustration, pop art, video games, surrealism, street art, and the psychedelic movement, Zan works in a wide array of materials and mediums – both digitally and traditionally – to bring these visions to life.
What is Salty Snail?
The Salty Snail Design Lab is a space owned and operated by Zan as a space to display and distribute her personal artwork. Built on the value of connection, shared inspiration, and support for your fellow human, this space was designed with the collective community in mind.
We dream to one day open our doors as an arts collective that many can take part in and enjoy.
For now, everything in this space is owned by Zan.
